1. Common Aging and Damage Problems of Old EPDM Ground

Most EPDM venues will gradually show various aging problems after 3 to 5 years of use, and different damage conditions correspond to targeted renovation schemes. The common defects are mainly divided into four categories:

1.1 Appearance aging and fading

Long-term ultraviolet radiation causes oxidative discoloration of EPDM particles, resulting in mottled and dull overall color, uneven local shades, and greatly reduced site appearance. The overall environmental quality of kindergartens, campuses and communities is seriously affected.

1.2 Surface particle peeling and damage

The adhesive glue ages and loses bonding force after long-term use, causing particles to loosen and fall off. The ground surface becomes rough and uneven, which is easy to accumulate dust and dirt. Moreover, local damage will gradually expand without timely repair, aggravating ground damage.

1.3 Structural cracking and hollowing

Base layer settlement, thermal expansion and contraction, and defective original construction technology will lead to irregular cracks, edge warping and overall hollowing of the ground. The ground will produce loose abnormal noise when trampled, and water accumulation will further intensify the delamination and damage of the ground structure.

1.4 Decline of comprehensive performance

Long-term friction and wear reduce the thickness of the EPDM ground, resulting in elastic loss and attenuation of shock absorption and buffering performance. The anti-slip coefficient fails to meet national standards, losing the core safety protection value of EPDM elastic ground and unable to effectively protect users from collision and fall injuries.

2. Core Advantages of EPDM Ground Renovation

Compared with the thorough removal and reconstruction of the whole site, professional EPDM renovation technology retains the original stable base layer and only renovates and upgrades the surface layer, which has multiple practical advantages and has become the preferred scheme for the renovation of various old elastic venues.

2.1 Higher cost performance

EPDM renovation eliminates the high cost of base layer reconstruction, earthwork cleaning and overall leveling. The construction cycle is shorter, which greatly reduces the labor, material and time costs of site renovation. After professional renovation, the service life of the ground can be extended by 3 to 8 years, realizing long-term cost reduction and efficiency improvement.

2.2 Upgraded safety performance

The renovation adopts new high-elasticity EPDM particles and environmental protection polyurethane adhesive with scientific proportioning and firm bonding. The flatness, anti-slip performance and buffering and shock absorption performance of the renovated ground all meet national standard requirements. It completely eliminates the safety hazards of old venues and is suitable for high-frequency use scenarios such as children’s activities and daily fitness exercises.

2.3 Strong aesthetic plasticity

The renovation can customize color matching, pattern modeling and functional zoning according to actual needs. It not only repairs the fading and mottling defects of the old ground, but also optimizes the overall visual effect of the site, creating a clean, vibrant and personalized sports and leisure space.

2.4 Environmental protection, durability and wide adaptability

The new EPDM particles are non-toxic, odorless, UV-resistant and adaptable to high and low temperatures. The renovated ground has significantly improved waterproof, aging resistance and wear resistance, and can stably adapt to outdoor open-air and semi-enclosed use environments.

3. Standardized Construction Process of EPDM Particle Ground Renovation

EPDM renovation has extremely high requirements for construction precision. The control of each construction link directly determines the flatness, bonding strength and service life of the renovated ground. The standardized whole-process construction process is as follows:

3.1 Site Survey and Pre-construction Cleaning

Before construction, conduct a comprehensive inspection of the whole site, investigate and mark hidden problems such as base layer looseness, cracks, hollowing and water accumulation. Thoroughly cut and remove all loose, hollowed, damaged and aging old surface particles, and clean up oil stains, moss, dust and sundries on the ground. Use a high-pressure water gun to deeply flush the site to ensure the base layer is clean, dry and impurity-free. Meanwhile, set up construction enclosure and warning signs to avoid external interference and ensure construction safety.

3.2 Base Layer Repair and Leveling

Fill and repair fine cracks of the base layer with special repair glue; repair large cracks and pit defects with elastic repair mortar to ensure the base layer is flat and solid. Control the site slope error within 3‰ to ensure smooth drainage and no water accumulation on the ground. After the repair is completed, fully dry and cure the base layer, polish the surface smoothly to improve the bonding adhesion between the base layer and the new surface material.

3.3 Full-site Primer Coating

After the base layer is completely dry, evenly roll and coat special interface primer on the whole site, achieving full coverage without leakage and accumulation. The primer can effectively enhance the bonding strength between the old and new layers, avoid delamination, warping and peeling of the ground in the later stage, and is a key process to ensure the renovation construction quality.

3.4 Mixing and Laying of New EPDM Surface Layer

Select high-quality new EPDM color particles and high-strength environmental protection adhesive, mix them in strict accordance with the standard proportion, and stir fully and evenly to ensure all particles are evenly coated with glue without dry materials and agglomeration. Lay the materials evenly with professional scrapers and pavers according to the designed ground thickness. Manually finely trim the edges, corners, drainage outlets, ramps and other key areas to ensure uniform thickness and flat surface. Appropriately thicken the pavement for high-frequency use areas, and spread anti-slip particles on the ramp to improve anti-slip performance.

3.5 Compaction, Edge Finishing and Detail Optimization

Compact the whole pavement in time after laying to eliminate surface pores and improve the compactness of the surface layer. Strengthen and finish the vulnerable parts such as site edges, joints and corners to prevent cracking and warping in the later stage. Divide functional areas and draw line patterns according to the design requirements, polish and optimize site details to improve the overall aesthetics of the venue.

3.6 Curing, Acceptance and Delivery

Implement closed curing after construction. The curing period shall be more than 48 hours at room temperature, during which pedestrian trampling and heavy pressure are prohibited. After the ground is completely cured, comprehensively detect the ground thickness, flatness, anti-slip coefficient, elasticity, hardness and other indicators to ensure all parameters meet national use standards. The site can be delivered and put into use after passing the acceptance.

4. Post-renovation Site Maintenance and Long-term Maintenance Skills

High-quality renovation construction combined with scientific daily maintenance can maximize the service life of the EPDM ground. Daily cleaning can be carried out with clean water or neutral detergent to remove surface dust and stains and prevent moss growth. Corrosive cleaners such as strong acid and strong alkali are strictly prohibited to avoid damaging the particle structure and color.

Avoid scratching and pressing the ground with sharp hard objects in daily use, and prohibit heavy vehicles and sharp equipment from entering the site. Regularly inspect the edges, corners and joints of the ground, and repair minor problems such as particle falling and cracks in a timely manner to prevent the expansion of damaged areas. For high-frequency use venues such as kindergartens and community activity areas, a comprehensive professional inspection and maintenance is recommended every 1 to 2 years to maintain the long-term safety and beauty of the site.

5. Conclusion

EPDM particle ground renovation is a systematic and professional site renewal project, rather than simple surface repair. Through accurate site survey, standardized construction technology and refined daily maintenance, it can completely solve the aging damage, fading and potential safety hazards of old venues. With high cost performance, it rebuilds a flat, anti-slip, elastic and beautiful sports and leisure ground. For kindergartens, campuses, community parks and other venues, professional EPDM ground renovation can revitalize old sites and continuously provide users with a safe, comfortable and high-quality activity environment.
